In the brief, there are floor areas given for each space that are required. Is the total building area of approximately 3900 m2 the total gross floor area? or is it just the building footprint?

also, the brief says that we are encouraged to challenge the suggested spaces and dimensions, does this mean that the dimensions given are minimum and we can exceed them?

      Hello Andre,

The 3900 m2 area proposed in the competition brief refers to the total usable area. If you add up all the areas for the classes, workshops, dorms, cafeteria, etc. 3900 m2 is what you get. If you decide to lay everything on a single floor then that will also be your building footprint, however if you choose to create multiple floors then your building’s footprint will be less.

As for what we mean by “challenge the suggested spaces and dimensions”, I’m going to refer you to the question asked by Sarah a few days ago, as I believe there is a good explanation there https://arkitekturo.com/topic/question-on-the-brief-project-to-imagine/

Please let us know if this does not answer your questions of if you have any other 😉

      Hello, I have another question

Do I need to justify in my presentation the need for other school spaces such as offices, libraries, and other areas as these things are not included in the required spaces of the brief?

also, does the 3900 m2 total usable area include the circulation spaces and service areas for the whole campus?

        Hello Andre,

The areas suggested on the brief do include circulation and services areas.

As far as offices, libraries, etc. The concept behind the Bauhaus Campus 2021 is that it will not be a traditional school. Quoting a section of the brief “There will be no preestablished hierarchy between campus attendees. Anyone will be free to organize a group, a class or a workshop, to share their knowledge or learn together, and anyone will be free to join or attend if they have an interest in the topic.” With this in mind spaces such as offices would not be required or will be minimum (for administration purposes only). Either way, these additional spaces should not take a main role in the project. If they remain as secondary spaces you don’t need to justify them in your panel. However, if you choose to include a library and make it the centerpiece of your project, then you’ll need to justify such a decision to the jury.

Hello Andre. It’s going to be a single din-A1 panel. Enjoy the extra space! 😉
