L – MIES VAN DER ROHE

The project is located in Area N.2, suggested by the brief, it develops through an L form with different elevated volumetries.

The project’s concept has been created from the aim to obtain a linked connection with the “IIT Chicago College of Architecture” and to respect the urban plans of the territory.

The geometry, an “L form”,  is inspired by the name of the architect, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, to which the project has been dedicated.

The letter “L” is recurring in the project because it is possible to find it in the masterplan through its overturning, in the details the form seems to be “layed out” in its long side.

In the plan, there are two main entrances and one for the administrative tower.

The first one is dedicated to the library and the second one to the auditorium and to the “Mies Collection” storage, which is located under the land’s height.

The two different depths are linked through an elevator, that is located in the library, but it is possible to reach it also getting of the stairs in the second entrance.

The main entry is provided with a lateral ramp.

The spatial unity is obtained by steel structure, which makes the façades regular; the spaces are available thanks to the structural props, used to support the shelves.

The administrative volume has a central block, composed by an elevator and stairs.

The zone, which is dedicated to the administration affairs, is placed in a separated parallelepiped, that is accessible only to the staff.

It develops on three floors, created a total height of 16 m. They are linked thanks to a stair and a lift.

Every floor has a squared form with a side of around 12 m and its façades are made with polycarbonate translucency. At the ground floor, there are an entryway with pivot doors, a bathroom, a reception counter, an accurate reproduction of the sculpture “Der Morgen”, which is placed in the Barcelona Pavilion by the architect Mies Van Der Rohe; an exposition of some objects dedicated to Bauhaus (“Schroeder 634 Table”, “Big Bauhaus Chess” and “Big Bauhaus Bauspiel”).

The every higher floors have two offices, a meeting room and some waiting seats.

The workstations are composed by “Thonet S285 Table” and “Cesca Chair”.

The library’s volume is a parallelepiped, with 30.25 x 60.25 m of dimensions.

The entrance is composed by four pivot doors and it is linked with two flights of stairs and a lateral ramp. In the building’s interior, there are bathrooms and a printers zone.

The shelves have the function to divide the total interior space in three different sections (architecture, urban planning and design) and they are also provided with corten steel slabs, that can be sliding or welded to the pillars.

The workstations are arranged according to a regular method, they are equipped with plugs boxes, which are located in the middle of every table and are useful to recharge the devices. Continuing to describe this space, there are also it

ThonetS43 seats and Wilhelm Wagenfeld table lamp WG 24.

The two blank walls are covered by travertine, provided by a sequence of led lights next to the interaxle spacing of the supporting steel structure.

This space is also equipped by a flooring heating system and a ceiling panels for heat reduction.

The cellar floor is organized to host  the “Mies Collection” and the auditorium. The total sizes are  30.40 x 25.80 m, in which 10 x 11.65 m for the auditorium.

All of the space is enlightened by the zenith sun light, that perforates across a water pond, used for the sheltering.

The auditorium has a slightly sloped flooring, organized by “Brno chairs”, while in the “Collection Storage” it has been used “Cesca chairs”, “S285 Marcel Breuer tables” (a little desk with cesca chairs) and also “Le Corbuier Chaise Longue – LC4”, that have the function to divide the public space to the staff one.
