The new “Mies Memorial Library” project is an important opportunity for dialogue with Modern Architecture. Mies’ plan for the IIT Campus was the greatest concentration of Mies-designed buildings in the world. The importance of such architectures, of its values and principles, leads us to consider them as “Modern Archeology”.

The goals is to interpret, in a contemporary key, the relationship between the new library and the Crown Hall, a renewed and extended meaning.

The project employs a 24 square-foot grid and it consists of two main settings:
-a basement floor that, through ramps, is aiming to be an extension of the Crown hall’s spaces. This environment is enlightened by a diffused light and it allows taking chance of a natural ventilation.
-a big two floors floating hall in which the main tasks of study and research can take place
